ECU Remapping
Northampton Motorsport can offer the world leading ECU remapping technology from REVO Technik.
From their UK base in Daventry, REVO has developed a method of remapping the engine management control units for the Volkswagen, Audi group family of diesel and petrol turbo engines.
So how does ECU remapping work? All modern engines are controlled by an engine control unit which receives information from sensors around the car. The ECU then decides on the correct amount of fuel, ignition advance and boost pressure for any engine operating condition.
With normally aspirated engines it is often difficult to improve power just by remapping the ECU as mechanical changes also need to be made to improve its ability to consume fuel and air.
With a turbo engine the air is forced into the engine by the turbo, more boost pressure equals more power. In very simple terms this is how significant amounts of power and torque can be released by raising the boost pressure and altering the fuel and ignition maps to suit.
This is of course an over simplification of the detailed programming work that is undertaken. In fact, one of the reasons for the success of the REVO software is the extensive reprogramming of each ECU type for each different model of car. Because REVO specialise in VAG cars this means that all new ECU codes are fully tested both on the dyno and on the road before the code is released to the dealer network.
This specialism also allows the REVO technicians the time to look at all aspects of the ECU’s functions and means that as well as developing excellent power, the engine is every bit as smooth and easy to drive as it was when it left the factory. Also, all of the inbuilt safety features designed to keep the engine operating reliably are maintained.
Revo has also developed the unique SPS (serial port switch) which allows the owner to further tune the ECU depending on the type of fuel being used and ambient air temperature. The SPS switch also has the facility to switch the performance programme off and return the car to standard power for servicing etc.
Another unique REVO feature is the trial software available for drive by wire petrol engined cars. Owners of these cars can have the performance software installed in the ECU free off charge and this will operate for five hours of ignition on time. After the trial period expires, the next time you turn the ignition off the ECU will reset to the standard factory programme. This try before you buy system lets you experience the benefits of REVO before you spend a penny.
But be warned once you’ve experienced the power of the REVO software your car will feel a bit boring without it!!
