Porsche 993 GT2 EVO

If you’re a Porsche fan or even just a bit of a petrol head then I’m sure you would agree this Porsche 993 GT2 EVO has got to be one of the most Iconic cars around.

Porsche 993 GT2 EVO

With only 13 race cars built by Porsche in the late 90’s they are both rare and fast and the twin turbo engine represented the pinnacle of the fuel injected turbocharged air cooled engines before Porsche switched to the more conventional water cooled engine design.

This car is even more special because Porsche reserved its last 1998 car and used it as a development car for the planned upgrade package for the upcoming 1999 season.  Changes to the GT rules at the time meant that this kit was not widely adopted so it is effectively 1 of 1 cars ever built by Porsche to this spec.  The car was subsequently sold to the Swedish Porsche importer where it raced extensively and won most of the races it attended.   The car is also featured in the official Porsche 993 GT Rennversion history book with a double page spread.

So what can be done to improve such a car?

Well back in the day these cars would have been run by professional teams with a bunch of dedicated engineers for specific areas of the car.  One of these and perhaps the most important would have been the TAG ECU that controlled all the engines fuel and ignition functions and safety strategies.

Unfortunately, these systems are now over 20 years old and finding someone with the hardware and expertise to access them has become almost impossible in recent years.  This significantly reduces the ability for a private individual or small team to run the car reliably and cost effectively.

Life Racing Engine Management Suite

This is where the team at Northampton Motorsport have been able to help by sympathetically replacing the original ECU with a new Life Racing F88 engine control unit with industry leading modern electronics and calibration strategies that have been perfected at the highest levels of international motorsport.

By using the mating side of the original ECU’s motorsport connectors we were able to keep the entire original engine harness, which means that the TAG ECU can be refitted at any time.

The Life Racing F88 has multiple fuel, ignition, waste gate and turbo speed control maps plus very fast and accurate twin lambda control and adaptive knock control which all means the engines performance can be optimised whilst keeping an expensive engine safe.  The ECU software is easy to use and has lots of user configurable maps, which allied to fast on board data logging means that you don’t need a trackside engineer to resolve any issues that might crop up.

These engines produce between 500 to 600 hp depending on boost map selected and with Porsches’ legendary handling and weighing in at 1100 kg, what’s not to like!
