Description
This Caterham 420 Throttle body (Air Box) kit has been developed and tested in house by Northampton Motorsport. By drawing on over 20 years’ experience of engine tuning and ECU calibration, we have been able to extract the best possible results without major internal engine upgrades. This kit is offered in three variants with the first retaining the entire throttle body kit under the bonnet (including the air filter). The second is with an air filter which exits the bonnet and the third kit also exits the bonnet, but with a Carbon Air Box. For more information and performance variation of each kit, please see the performance toggles below.
The Caterham 420 Throttle body (Air Box) kit is suitable for the 420 and 420R models and both the S3 and SV chassis. It can be used on the road, track and for competition use.

Unlike many of our competitors, this kit is comprehensive and includes everything that you will need for the throttle body conversion. If you are comparing the price with other suppliers, please be sure to check that they have included everything that you will require.
Please note: Once this kit has been installed, the car needs to have the Engine Control Unit recalibrated to suit the modifications. The standard Caterham MBE ECU is encrypted and cannot be accessed without the correct software. Northampton Motorsport can in most cases access these locked ECU’s however we would need to confirm this by connecting to your ECU before any work on the car is started. The locked ECU can be replaced if required by the unlocked version of the ECU which is an MBE 9M4. This is completely compatible with the Caterham wiring harness and has the added benefit of allowing us to carry out remote support should it ever be required.
Should you wish to purchase an unlocked ECU and have your calibration work done elsewhere then the unit can be supplied with a base calibration to get your engine up and running. To connect to the MBE ECU you will need Easimap 6 software and an MBE CAN Mapping Kit.
Caterham 420 Throttle body Package & Performance options:
Under Bonnet / Option 1
Our first option is the only option we offer which keeps everything under the bonnet but is only suitable for SV (wide) chassis. Our test car saw 226.5bhp and 168.5lb/ft with gains starting from 4000rpm up to 8000rpm. If you look at the rolling road graph below, the black lines are prior to installation and tuning with the red lines after.
As with all tuning packages, it’s impossible to guarantee exactly what power figures you will receive. The reason for this is every car is different and items such as the exhaust, catalyst, mileage, service history and general engine wear are all factors in the results. A consideration must be factored in for this when purchasing this kit. The initial power run on the test car was completely standard.
Out of Bonnet with Air filter / Option 2
Our second option is aimed at Fast Road applications where induction noise is not a factor. Out test car saw the best results out of the three packages with 229.2bhp and 175.2lb/ft at peak power with the best gains in the midrange starting from 4000rpm. If you look at the rolling road graph below, the black lines are prior to installation and tuning with the red lines after.
Please see the listing for our our Air Filter Kit for more information.

Out of Bonnet with Air Box / Option 3
Our third option is aimed at track day enthusiasts where keeping the noise down is imperative. On our test car, we saw gains across the entire rev range with the best gains found in the midrange. After calibration, we saw 224.8bhp and 163.8lb/ft peak power. If you look at the rolling road graph below, the black lines are prior to installation and tuning with the red lines after.
